I am writing to register my concern about the case of Syed Fahad Hashmi, a Muslim American citizen being held in solitary confinement in the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City on two counts of providing and conspiring to provide material support and two counts of making and conspiring to make a contribution of goods or services to Al Qaeda. Now that the American people have elected a new president on the explicit promise of reversing the Bush Administration’s subversion of civil liberties, I call upon Attorney General Eric Holder to review and alleviate the conditions of Hashmi’s detention, particularly his solitary confinement and the SAMs imposed upon him; to remove or revise the constraints on his right to a fair trial; and to guarantee that his actions – rather than his constitutionally protected statements, beliefs, and associations – constitute the basis of the government’s case against him, in court and in the public arena.
